Effective Communication in Healthcare Genetics

The rapid advancement of genetic research has transformed the role of genetic testing in modern healthcare, yet effective communication of genetic information between healthcare providers and patients remains a critical challenge. This dissertation addresses the need for enhanced communication strategies within clinical genetics, emphasizing the importance of individualized approaches. Utilizing the Walker and Avant methodology, Chapter II operationalizes the definition of effective communication in healthcare genetics, while subsequent chapters explore the determinants influencing communication efficacy. A systematic literature review is presented in Chapter III, and identifies provider-specific and patient-specific factors that affect patient-provider communication in clinical genetics, summarizing current knowledge and revealing gaps in understanding. Chapter IV employs a survey methodology to analyze cognitive, emotional, and psychosocial factors and their association with information needs and communication preferences for patient-provider communication in clinical genetics among a representative U.S. population sample. Findings highlight the significant correlation between marginality, acculturation, health literacy, genomic literacy, and genomic knowledge and specific informational needs and communication preferences. This research emphasizes the necessity for tailored communication strategies that address the complexities of genetic information and individual patient needs to improve patient-provider communication in healthcare genetics settings. Ultimately, this work aims to inform future research methodologies and clinical practices to foster effective communication in genetic healthcare, thereby enhancing patient engagement, understanding, and satisfaction.
