El equilibrio imposible: Formas de resistencia a la implementación del sistema de Intendencias en el Valle de Guatemala

In the Audiencia of Guatemala, the representatives of the different institutions based in the capital – such as the council, the audience, or the royal treasury – applied different strategies to avoid or delay the establishment of the Ordenanza de Intendentes in the territory. Adjacent to the capital; that is, in the Valley of Guatemala. These tactics can be considered forms of resistance to institutional change due to several factors: the assurance of the continuity of an established order – the need for security -, the lack of clarity about the advantages of applying this new system and that the members of the elite perceived that with the application of the administration system their interests could be threatened. In these ways, in this work we intend to explain the actions of the representatives of these institutions and the way in which they implemented a silent opposition to the change.
