Eficacia de la nitrofurantoína en el tratamiento de las infecciones urinarias en adultos

Urinary tract infections (UTI) often occur in the adult population and affect millions of people globally each year. Among the various treatment options available, Nitrofurantoin stands out as an effective and safe drug, becoming a prominent treatment for these infections. The aim of this article is to analyze the efficacy and efficiency of nitrofurantoin in the therapeutic treatment of urinary tract infections in the adult population, through a literature review of high impact scientific articles to reduce morbidity and mortality. A critical reading of scientific articles published in the last five years in high impact journals, such as Elsevier, PubMed, Wiley, SciELO, ScienceDirect, etc., was carried out. In addition, the ranking of each article in the Scimago platform was verified, confirming that most of them belong to the Q1 and Q2 quartiles, indicating their relevance. The clinical cure rate and bacteriological eradication has shown that nitrofurantoin is effective in the management of uncomplicated urinary tract infections. This drug demonstrated greater resolution in female patients with uncomplicated cystitis compared to other available treatments.
