Efecto del rectificado de cuchillas sobre la calidad superficial de madera cepillada de Pino radiata
The grinding operation allows to obtain a unique cutting orbit for all the knives installed on a rotating head. During this process, a grinding stone passes over the moving knife edges, generating a bevel whose width varies depending on the grinding intensity. An adequate selection of the bevel width is essential to ensure a homogeneous and quality cut on the wood surface. This study aimed to evaluate how the bevel width and the level of knife wear (represented by the planing length) influence the energy consumption and the surface quality of radiata pine wood. To do so, four bevel widths and four levels of knife wear were tested, using the shear strength of glued joints as an indicator of surface quality. The results revealed that both the bevel width and the planing length have a direct relationship with energy consumption, while they present an inverse relationship with the shear strength. Based on these findings, a bevel width of 0.3 mm is recommended for planing radiata pine wood, as it presents lower energy consumption and greater shear resistance.
