Design av kylsystem för Elegance Pod : En konceptuell och strukturell design av ett luftkylnings system för marina framdrivningsapplikationer.
This thesis explores the development of an optimized air-cooled system for the Elegance Pod, a permanent magnet motor electric propulsion unit designed and produced by Kongsberg Maritime for high-end marine applications. The project was motivated by the need to reduce the physical footprint, weight, and cost of the existing cooling solution, while maintaining thermal performance and ensuring compliance with relevant marine industry standards and regulations. A structured product development process was followed, beginning with a requirement specification informed by Olsson’s criteria matrix and continuing through functional analysis, concept generation using methods such as brainstorming and SCAMPER, and systematic evaluation through screening and scoring matrices. The selected concept features a vertically oriented layout, utilizing available space efficiently while minimizing longitudinal intrusion into the vessel’s interior. Key components include a top-mounted centrifugal fan, a fin-and-tube heat exchanger, and a droplet separator with an integrated filter. Sizing and selection of components were based on simulations, technical data, and engineering calculations addressing airflow, pressure losses, and thermal loads. Practical input from Kongsberg personnel and workshop discussions also guided decisions related to materials and structural integration. The proposed system offers advantages over the previous solution, including reduced longitudinal intrusion into the vessel, a 25% decrease in fan power consumption, a 19% reduction in noise pollution and the retention of adequate serviceability. Overall, the work contributes to a more sustainable, cost-effective, and technically robust cooling solution for current and future iterations of the Elegance Pod based on its application within the yacht segment. Based on the evaluated design it was deemed structural while resulting in advancements in key improvement areas such as weight, size and cost-efficiency.
