¿Continúa siendo la apendicectomía un procedimiento seguro? Estudio sobre la morbilidad y mortalidad asociadas a la apendicitis aguda en el Hospital Carlos Andrade Marín de Quito
A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out to determine the morbidity and mortality associated with acute appendicitis at the Carlos Andrade Marín Hospital in Quito. A total of 707 surgical protocols of appendectomies corresponding to the period between March 2012 and February 2013 were analyzed. Sixty-three percent of the procedures were performed in men (n=443) and 37% in women (n=261), being more frequent in the 30-39 years age group, with an average hospital stay between 1 and 3 days. Laparoscopic surgeries predominated (n=408), in which a shorter hospital stay was observed. The most common complications were appendicitis in the suppurative phase and surgical site infection. Overall mortality was 0.2% (n=2).
