Concept development through the Modular Function Deployment method : A case study of aircraft tow tractors

Efficient assembly and modular design are crucial factors on optimizing productionand facilitating service and maintenance. This study focuses on developing amodular fastening method and product architecture for aircraft towing tractors, specifically Kalmar Motor AB’s TBL 190, using Modular Function Deployment(MFD).Customer requirements were identified through systematic analysis, and varioussolutions were developed. The result is a modular fastening system with rails andadapters, enabling quick assembly, easy interchangeability, and improvedserviceability. A digital CAD prototype visualizes module placement and assemblytechniques. The findings highlight cost and time savings in manufacturing, whilemodularization enhances product adaptability and maintenance efficiency. Thisstudy also presents potential future improvements in durability and functionality.
