Conocimiento sobre la lactancia materna en embarazadas posterior a una intervención educativa en la UMF 71

Breastfeeding is crucial for child growth and development, the WHO recommends exclusively for the first six months and continued up to two years. Factors such as maternal age, education level, and psychosocial status influence early breastfeeding cessation, highlighting the need to assess pregnant women's knowledge for proper support. The aim of the study was to determine breastfeeding knowledge in pregnant women after an educational intervention at UMF No. 71. A quasi-experimental study with 63 pregnant participants was conducted between August and November 2022. The intervention included a 60-minute session on breastfeeding techniques and milk expression. Questionnaires were applied before and after the intervention to assess knowledge. The results showed an average score before the educational intervention was 76.34 (87% of the participants) showing good knowledge. After the intervention, the mean score increased to 87 (96.83%) demonstrated good knowledge. This change was statistically significant, with a p value=0.000 in the Wilcoxon test. The study shows that educational interventions constitute an effective tool to increase knowledge about breastfeeding in pregnant women, by offering them the information and support necessary to make informed decisions about feeding their newborns.

Abstract

Breastfeeding is crucial for child growth and development, the WHO recommends exclusively for the first six months and continued up to two years. Factors such as maternal age, education level, and psychosocial status influence early breastfeeding cessation, highlighting the need to assess pregnant women's knowledge for proper support. The study shows that educational interventions constitute an effective tool to increase knowledge about breastfeeding in pregnant women, by offering them the information and support necessary to make informed decisions about feeding their newborns.
