Carbon Accounting Tool for Greenhouse Gas Emission Sources in Steam-Methane Reforming Facility
Hydrogen production facility stands out as one of the significant CO2 contributors in the oil and gas industry. As hydrogen will emerge as a clean energy source in the future, this research will focus on carbon footprint assessment in hydrogen production facilities. This study aims to quantify the amount of carbon dioxide equivalent through direct and indirect emissions, comprised of stationary combustion, process emissions, and energy consumption. A comparative analysis has been conducted between the Steam-Methane Reforming (SMR) facility in company A. The study revealed that SMR-2 shows the highest CO2 emissions per production of 9.823 tCO2 e/tH2 , whereas SMR-1 has the lowest emissions of 8.956 tCO2 e/tH2 . The study indicates that SMR facility has average emissions of 8.9 tCO2 e/tH2 to 9.8 9 tCO2 e/tH2 depending on its emission factor and production efficiency. 99% of CO2 emissions originate from direct emission of process emission. As SMR emerged as the most efficient technology for hydrogen production, the study recommended implementing CO2 mitigation at the critical emissions source, process emissions.
