BIM I DAGENS BYGGNADSDESIGN : Byggnadsinformationsmodellering testat på Ortodoxa S:t Maria kyrkan i Eskilstuna

Abstract Purpose: This study aims to explore how Building Information Modeling (BIM) can be used during the design phase of construction projects, with a focus on its strengths and limitations. The case study of the Orthodox St. Maria Church in Eskilstuna was used to examine how BIM supports analysis of daylight, acoustics, and visual design before construction begins. Method: The methodology is based on a quantitative approach, combining literature review, case study, simulations, and field measurements. A BIM model was developed using Revit and used to simulate daylight and analyze visual design and solar studies. Acoustic simulations were made with the help of Ludvig Svensson AB acoustic tool. The simulations were then compared with measurements taken on site to evaluate accuracy and practical usefulness. Results: The results showed that BIM is a valuable tool for visualizing and analyzing design decisions early in a project. The daylight simulations were generally reliable, although the software showed limitations in handling frosted glass, which led to overestimated light levels in rooms with less transparent windows. Acoustic simulations provided helpful guidance but were limited by the software’s inability to model complex shapes such as sloped ceilings and balconies. Conclusions: BIM is a powerful tool in the design stage, especially when used critically and supported by field validation. The comparison with field measurements confirmed that BIM can produce realistic outcomes if accurate input data is used and the software’s limitations are considered. For daylight, the simulation tools were relatively well-developed. For acoustics, however, more advanced tools are needed to achieve reliable results. BIM is most effective in projects where time and resources allow for thorough modeling and analysis. Keywords: BIM, building design, daylight simulation, acoustic simulation, field measurement, Revit, Ludvig Svensson AB
