Комеморативні практики Великої Британії та український досвід війни

This article analyzes commemorative practices in the United Kingdom and their potential application in Ukraine for shaping national memory and identity in the context of the Russo-Ukrainian war. It explores historical memory as a mechanism for societal consolidation and its influence on sociocultural processes and state memory policy. The study examines British approaches to memorializing military and civilian victims—particularly through architectural complexes, symbolic rituals, digital platforms, and educational initiatives—that contribute to preserving historical heritage in public consciousness. Special attention is given to initiatives such as Remembrance Day, the symbolic use of the red poppy, national memorials (including the Cenotaph in London and the National Memorial Arboretum), and the integration of historical narratives into media, culture, and education. These practices are analyzed in terms of their capacity to strengthen civic identity, promote unity, and foster a sense of responsibility toward historical memory. The article also considers the Ukrainian experience of commemoration, including the honoring of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred, remembrance of defenders and civilians who died in the Russo-Ukrainian war, and modern memorial forms—ranging from traditional monuments to digital initiatives. The author evaluates the potential for adapting British commemorative models to the Ukrainian context, emphasizing the importance of a cohesive national memory narrative, architectural and digital memorials, educational programs, and cultural projects. Proposed mechanisms for implementing such initiatives aim to foster national identity, enhance social cohesion, and integrate historical memory into state policy and civic life. The article also addresses the risks of political manipulation of memory and underscores the need for a critical and balanced approach to developing new commemorative practices in Ukraine.

This article analyzes commemorative practices in the United Kingdom and their potential application in Ukraine for shaping national memory and identity in the context of the Russo-Ukrainian war. It explores historical memory as a mechanism for societal consolidation and its influence on sociocultural processes and state memory policy.
