The purpose of the research is to study the specifics of the depiction of the events of the campaign of the Polish prince Boleslaw I the Brave to Kyiv in the works of Polish historians who worked in the second half of the 19th century and before the beginning of World War II. To establish the specific features of stereotypes regarding these events that were present in Polish historiography and the historical consciousness of Poles, to determine the circumstances that influenced their formation. The research methodology is based on the principles of objectivism and historicism, methods of analysis and synthesis, comparison, criticism of historical sources. Scientific novelty: for the first time in Ukrainian historiographic research, the peculiarities of the depiction of the events of the Polish-Rus war of 1018 in Polish historiography from the second half of the 19th century until 1939 are specifically studied. Conclusions. The image of the campaign of the Polish prince Boleslaw I the Brave to Kyiv was one of the most important in the Polish historiography of the medieval history of Poland. Its formation was largely influenced by ancient legends and tales, and the depiction of the events of 1018 in the writings of Polish historians influenced the formation of their historical myth in the minds of the Polish people. Researchers have mostly tried to glorify Boleslaw I and depict his military campaign as a triumphant act on the way to transforming Poland not only into a regional leader of medieval Central and Eastern Europe, but also a rival of the then German and Byzantine empires. Historians paid a lot of attention to semi-mythological events that later became one of the symbols of Polish identity. In particular, this concerned the story about the Shcherbets sword and the strike on the Golden Gate of Kyiv. Such a depiction of historical events served the patriotic education of Poles in the 19th and 20th centuries, formed models of behavior in relation to their eastern neighbors, and imposed ideas on the reproduction of the Polish state, which should reach its borders to the Dnieper.
