Lejla Demiri. ʿUbayd Allāh Al-Samarqandī (d. 701/1301) On Servanthood and Repentance: A Critical Edition and Annotated Translation. Cambridge: CMC Press, 2023. 104 s. ISBN: 978-1-916608-00-9
In recent years, academic interest in theological texts from the later period has increased significantly; this interest has brought to the forefront the re-evaluation of manuscripts belonging to late Islamic thought. In this context, studies on Māturīdīsm have become more systematic and in-depth compared to the past, thanks to both the unearthing of manuscripts and the increase in academic interest in this field. Efforts to reveal the originality and historical continuity of the Māturīdī tradition, primarily through the verification and translation of classical sources, enable new readings in the field, and these readings open the door to new research. In this context, the introduction of the works of scholars who have witnessed history but have not been sufficiently conveyed to the present day and their inclusion in the scientific literature provide a remarkable contribution, especially in terms of the science of theology. Studies on the manuscripts of relatively lesser-known scholars offer the opportunity to analyze both the intellectual orientations exhibited by Māturīdī tradition in different periods and the historical development of the science of theology more soundly. Lejla Demiri's work On Servanthood and Repentance should also be evaluated within this framework, because it presents a critical edition and English translation of two treatises by ʿUbaydullāh al-Samarqandī (d. 701/1301), which have not been studied before, and thus makes an original and meaningful contribution that enriches the Māturīdī theological literature.
