Investigating ecosystem structure and function in restored coastal saltmarshes: a macro to micro-scale approach
Coastal saltmarsh ecosystems are increasingly degraded by human activities, driving restoration efforts worldwide. However, the effectiveness of these efforts remains poorly understood. This PhD thesis explores the impact of restoration on sediment and ecosystem functioning across macro to microbial scales in natural and restored saltmarshes in Venice Lagoon (Italy), and Hunter River and Georges River estuaries (Australia). Findings revealed that despite variations in microbial community composition, restored saltmarshes exhibited comparable macro- and micro-scale ecosystem functioning to natural counterparts. These results emphasize the significance of restoration approaches and monitoring duration in achieving successful restoration outcomes.
