Experiments in the Design of Effective Visualizations to Enhance Decision-making and Mitigate Cognitive Bias

Visualizations transform complex data into understandable and compelling graphical representations, facilitating quicker and more informed decision-making. While visualization can accelerate the decision-making processes, speed does not guarantee quality. Quick decisions often result from the missing of deeper analysis and critical thinking. Visualizations can also trigger cognitive biases that skew understanding and decisions, especially if users are not aware of these biases. There are two key problems: incorrect usage or understanding of visualizations and faulty design of visualizations. To address these problems, the researchers designed and developed a Visualization Education Platform that will not only help designers design effective visualizations but will also help decision-makers make better decisions. Furthermore, the researcher conducted an experiment to evaluate if the VEP is effective in reducing, eliminating, and overcoming cognitive biases in decision-making using visualizations. This paper underscores the need for research to reduce cognitive biases and enhance decision-making through visualization education.
