Experimentally backed simulation of textured CBN grinding wheels for enhanced performance

CBN grinding wheels have proven to be a superior alternative compared to other types. This superiority is owed to the fact that CBN grits are cost-efficient yet have comparable hardness to diamonds. However, all grinding wheels generate high amount of heat at the contact zone due to friction and ploughing. This affects workpiece surface integrity and attenuates wheels’ lifespan. Various studies have been conducted using different coolants and application methods, which have proven to be practical. Texturing grinding wheels with grooves has been introduced as a solution to maintain the generated heat and temperature within allowable ranges. This study aims to analyze this approach on CBN grinding wheels using a developed software and assess its veracity by the counterpart experiments. Conventional CBN grinding wheels with grooves generated on the peripheral area by laser were used. Results from simulations corroborate the experimental results, suggesting that channels on the wheels would significantly reduce the average grinding forces.
