Exploring the Impact of Generative AI on Learning to Code in a US College

Generative AI holds significant promise for transforming coding education by offering immediate feedback, debugging assistance, and personalized guidance. This study examines how AI tools affect the collegiate learning experience, focusing on both benefits and risks to coding skills development. Combining large-scale text analytics of the r/learnprogramming subreddit with 25 semi-structured interviews with computer science students and recent graduates, we identify key AI benefits that include accelerated learning and more accessible support. Risks related to academic integrity, code ownership, and overreliance on AI-generated solutions are also evidenced. Preliminary findings underscore the importance of striking a balance between AI-driven resources and more traditional learning methods to preserve deeper conceptual understanding. This research contributes practical insights for responsibly integrating generative AI into programming curricula and informs future investigations into discipline-specific nuances.
