Tek Parti Döneminde 1947 Yılı Haccı ve Bunun Basına Yansıması

One of the five pillars of Islam is that those who are physically and physically able to perform Hajj worship. Since Hajj is an obligatory worship, it must be performed in the month of Dhu'l-Hijjah every year according to the Hijri calendar. Muslims have performed this worship from the time when Hajj was first obligatory until today. However, both in the last days of the Ottoman Empire and in the first quarter of the Republic, it is seen that pilgrimage was not performed by the state. The most important reason for this was that the pilgrimage routes were not safe. The inability of the Arabs to achieve political unity, their constant fighting with each other and the military activities of the colonial states put the pilgrimage under danger. This situation was also valid in the Republican period and in addition to this, pilgrimage could not be performed officially due to the state's inability to provide foreign currency to those who would go on pilgrimage. Those who wanted to go to Hajj travelled illegally, without passports and through other countries. After World War II and the transition to multi-party political life, the conservatives intensified their activities for the government to officially authorise hajj and to take the necessary steps in this regard. As a matter of fact, in 1947, the state issued passports to pilgrims and made it easier for them to obtain foreign currency. However, since the cholera epidemic coincided with the pilgrimage period, both the government and the pilgrims faced various difficulties. The Turkish press did not pay attention to the pilgrimage at first, but when the issue of pilgrims not returning home after the cholera epidemic came to the agenda, it attracted their attention. Akşam and Cumhuriyet Newspaper gave the most importance to the pilgrimage. We learn about the arrival of pilgrims, their quarantine and what they went through during the pilgrimage in the most detailed way from these newspapers. Officially 7000-8000 people went on pilgrimage this year. In this study, the pilgrimage of 1947 will be analysed in the Turkish press. The developments before and after the pilgrimage will be handled in a press-centred way. Archival documents, the newspapers of the period, and the copyrighted and analysed works are used in the study. As a result of the study, it was determined that the pilgrimage of 1947 was quite difficult for the citizens.
