PERIODONTAL COMPLICATIONS DUE TO STRESS ON ABUTMENTS OF REDUCED PARTIAL EDENTULISM

Aim of the study The aim of this study was to evaluate, based on the results obtained from the different studies in literature, the periodontal complications following stress on abutments of reduced partial edentulism. Material and methods Articles were searched using the keywords “periodontal complications”, “stress”, “abutment teeth”, “reduced partial edentulism” in PubMed, Google Scholar, Research Gate. Further search criteria included being published in English, and between January 2005 and November 2024. Then, relevant articles were selected, included, and analyzed in this review. Results The articles we have selected prove that failure to restore missing teeth in time can easily lead to stress of abutment teeth. A fixed partial denture (FPD) can improve stress conduction and distribution and prevent periodontal disease insulted. During mastication, the occlusal force cannot be transmitted along the long axis of the tooth. It is first transmitted to the tooth cervix periodontium and concentrated, leading to alveolar bone resorption and periodontal tissue damage.. Conclusions Among the complications caused by the stress on the abutments are resorption of the supporting bone, angular bone defects without periodontal pockets, tooth mobility.
