Notas de um regime: o Estado Novo entre Canções e Cinema: o Estado Novo entre Canções e Cinema
This article analyzes the use of films and songs as tools of ideological propaganda during the Estado Novo (1937-1945), a dictatorial regime led by Getúlio Vargas. To do so, we draw on popular songs and short films, the latter produced by the National Institute of Educational Cinema (INCE), an agency created in 1936 with the goal of producing films for educational purposes. Based on existing studies on the subject, we selected certain songs and films for analysis, with particular focus on the themes of nationalism and propaganda present in the chosen productions. Supporting the existing historiography, we highlight the importance that cinema and radio gained during Vargas's government, being used to promote the values defended by the regime, especially due to their wide reach among both literate populations and illiterates.
