The purpose of the research is to examine the outstanding features of this process in Ukraine on the example of significant landmark performances from the time of the formation of the profession of theatre designer (late nineteenth century) to the first artistic tandems of director and artist (early twentieth century). Having outlined the global context of the emergence and development of scenography, to draw parallels with interesting world names in the field of theatre art and to indicate the place of Ukrainian scenographers in the global context. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism, objectivity and a systematic approach. Based on these principles, the research prioritised the following methods: statistical (a description of the most important performances of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was used to determine how the profession of stage designer developed in Ukraine), empirical (study of literary sources, research of certain significant performances), and comparative (comparison of Ukrainian processes with global processes in this field, which helped to identify the essence of the phenomena under study by the similarity and difference of inherent features). The scientific novelty of the article lies in the fact that the author studies the formation of the profession of stage designer in Ukraine, taking into account the global context and focusing on the study of selected iconic performances. Conclusions. Thus, Ukrainian scenography originated and developed in parallel with global trends (from the late nineteenth century, and finally formed in the early twentieth century in the stationary theatre), gradually absorbing all the elements necessary for creating a stage space: visual image, stage light, space efficiency, the relationship between the actor’s image and the stage space.
