FATİH HARBİYE ROMANINDA DOĞU-BATI DUALİTESİ VE TOPLUMSAL DİSSOSİYASYON
Peyami Safa, one of the writers of modern Turkish literature, is known for including an intricate issue of Turkish society, the East-West duality, in almost all of his works. The novel Fatih Harbiye, in which the author deals with the East-West duality in the character-space-time triangle and with representational elements, is a work that enables general judgements to made about his literary understanding, as well as revealing the “two faces” of each cultural element that shapes lifestyle of Turkish society. Fatih Harbiye is suitable to be analyzed with a perspective based on the concept of societal dissociation within the scope of Dissoanalysis Theory. Societal dissociation is a mass manifestation of the psychopathogenic orientation, similar to loss of integration, division, or fragmentation experienced by individuals at the level of consciousness communities and societies formed by these individuals. In Fatih Harbiye, the East-West duality, dealt with on the axis of the main character Neriman, exemplifies societal dissociation by being supported by other novel characters, the place and time period in which the events occur. In the novel, Neriman is the representative character of the dissociation in Turkish society. Neriman's tides between “identity dissolution” due to “denial of self-identity” and “individuation” essentially dissociative perspective of society. This study evaluates the state of “multiple consciousness”, loss of integration, or dissociation experienced by the soul of society within the framework of dualities through the novel “Fatih-Harbiye”, which is woven with representational meanings.
