ARbility Map: Designing Accessible Navigation Systems with Augmented Reality for Mobility-Impaired Individuals

This paper addresses the challenges faced by individuals with mobility disabilities and special considerations in navigating both indoor and outdoor environments, due to the limitations of current 2D digital maps. Conventional navigation systems fail to synchronize with the user’s viewpoint, creating additional cognitive and physical strain when using small devices. To address this, ARbility Map is designed for Augmented Reality (AR). A high-fidelity prototype specifically tailored to the unique needs of individuals with mobility limitations in their unfamiliar environment is proposed after conducted user research. Key features of the proposed solution include providing accessible information in advance about floor material, presence of shelter in the middle of the way, location of the lifts or elevators, real-time data on transfer points, and customizable route options based on user preferences for smoother, quicker, or more entertaining paths. Additionally, an effective alert mechanism helps users avoid potential risks associated with transport conditions and environmental factors, further enhancing their journey experience.

Abstract

This paper addresses the challenges faced by individuals with mobility disabilities and special considerations in navigating both indoor and outdoor environments, due to the limitations of current 2D digital maps. Conventional navigation systems fail to synchronize with the user’s viewpoint, creating additional cognitive and physical strain when using small devices. To address this, ARbility Map is designed for Augmented Reality (AR). A high-fidelity prototype specifically tailored to the unique needs of individuals with mobility limitations in their unfamiliar environment is proposed after conducted user research.
