Gastric trichobezoar and Rapunzel syndrome in a pediatric patient. A case report
Background: Gastric trichobezoar is a rare condition involving the accumulation of ingested hair within the gastrointestinal tract, frequently associated with psychiatric disorders such as trichotillomania and trichophagia. When the mass extends beyond the pylorus into the small intestine, it is referred to as Rapunzel Syndrome. This report describes the case of a 17-year-old female patient with a history of childhood trauma and self-destructive eating behaviors, who presented with chronic abdominal pain and weight loss. Imaging revealed a large gastro-duodenal bezoar with signs of perforation and early septic shock. The patient required urgent surgical intervention and postoperative intensive care. This case highlights the importance of early recognition and multidisciplinary management of trichobezoar, particularly in vulnerable pediatric populations. Keywords: Gastric bezoar, Rapunzel syndrome.
