NEP 2020 AND INCLUSIVE EDUCATION: POTENTIAL FOR ENHANCING ACCESS AND EQUITY
Inclusive Education doesn’t only mean to include the disabled/differently abled students in the mainstream education but it is a pedagogical approach that advocates for the education of all students, regardless of their diverse characteristics, in a common learning environment. This approach emphasizes the provision of equal opportunities for academic and social growth to every individual. It encompasses various dimensions, including students with diverse cognitive, physical, and emotional abilities, such as giftedness, disabilities and learning difficulties/slow learners, students from urban, rural, and remote areas, students from diverse economic backgrounds, including those from low-income families, historically oppressed communities such as SCs, STs etc. The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) heralds a transformative era in Indian education by prioritizing inclusive practices. This paper examines the potential of NEP 2020 in enhancing access and equity for diverse learners. NEP 2020’s inclusive education framework aims to bridge existing gaps by promoting equal participation, reducing barriers, and fostering empathetic school cultures. The policy’s provisions – such as individualized education plans, teacher training, and accessible infrastructure – are analyzed for their potential impact. This research draws on theoretical perspectives of inclusive education, policy analysis, and empirical studies to assess NEP 2020’s alignment with international standards and best practices. The paper argues that successful implementation of NEP 2020’s inclusive education vision requires sustained efforts towards teacher capacity building, resource allocation, and community engagement.
