A Study of Psychological Well-being and Social Recognition among LGBTQ+ Individuals in India
This study explores the intersection of two interconnected issues of social acceptance and the mental health among LGBTQ+ Individuals in India. Although the decriminalisation of homosexuality was progressive in India in 2018, LGBTQ+ individuals experienced discrimination, stigma, and negligence without institutional support in education, healthcare, law, or employment. The study also examines particular issues of the LGBTQ+ community from historical, cultural, legal, and psychological perspectives. In addition to this, family rejection, colonised inefficacy of the healthcare system, discrimination in workplace, media representation, and the role of community-based grassroots activism are significant areas to provide realistic recommendations. Moreover, reformation of law must be in harmony with broader societal and institutional levels so that LGBTQ+ well-being can be recognised in India and enable them to flourish in India in the future.
