Malayan Pit Viper in Cattle Pens: Hidden Threats in Rural Livestock Enclosures
In rural areas of Thailand, particularly in regions where cattle and buffalo are raised as economic livestock, it is not uncommon to encounter snakes entering animal pens. One of the most dangerous species frequently found in such areas is the Russell’s Viper (Daboia russelii siamensis) a venomous snake that poses a serious threat to both animals and humans. Due to its quiet behavior, preference for humid and shaded environments, and tendency to remain motionless during the day, this snake is often misidentified as harmless by villagers. This article aims to provide essential knowledge about the Russell’s Viper, including its physical characteristics, reasons for appearing in livestock pens, the dangers of its hemotoxic venom, and basic preventive measures for rural communities. The goal is to raise awareness and reduce incidents of envenomation and death, particularly in areas like the Buddharaksa Moral Community Project, where livestock and community forests coexist closely.
