With the opening of the defence sector for private players, several players have made their foray into defence manufacturing. Modi government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and ‘make-in India’ initiatives are expected to give a fillip to the domestic defence industry. It is in this backdrop, this paper traces the role of private players in the Indian defence manufacturing sector and the hurdles ahead.
