Discrete Event Simulation Research: Simulating Van Schedule Optimization to Reduce PUV Crowding
Jose Panganiban is a coastal municipality in the province of Camarines Norte. The Municipality was formerly named Mambulao taken from the word “Mambulawan” meaning abundant of gold, The Municipality of Jose Panganiban is a 2nd class municipality of Camarines Norte, Philippines. The route from Jose Panganiban to Daet faces significant challenges due to a disorganized scheduling system for public utility vehicles (PUVs), particularly vans. This research aims to develop a strategic, simulation-based solution to optimize the scheduling of PUVs on this route. By modeling various van departure schedules and frequencies, the study will explore how scheduling adjustments can alleviate overcrowding, reduce waiting times, and improve overall travel efficiency, particularly during peak hours. Stress, anxiety, and frustration experienced by people during their commute can decrease their productivity at work, increase levels of counterproductive work behavior, and lower their engagement with organizational citizenship behavior. The researchers found out through using Discrete Event Simulation Algorithm that departure time of vans are greatly affected by factors such as arrival time, waiting/loading time, peak/non-peak hours rate. The findings of this study lowered the current waiting time of 25 minutes down to 21.60 minutes.
