Linguistic pragmatics: a tool for resolving ethnic conflict in contemporary society

Abstract Language is one of the major distinguishing features between humans and animals for communication. It is an essential tool for skilled communication that enhances successful human interaction. Linguistics is the scientific study of language as a means of communication by humans. The branches of linguistics relate to phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. In recent times, linguistic research has shown that language is appropriately used and understood when put in a context. Pragmatics is a sub-system of linguistics that studies the use of language and the interpretation of its meaning in a social context. This article examines the role of linguistic pragmatics in resolving ethnic conflict by focusing on how language, culture, and context influence communication between diverse ethnic groups. Ethnic conflicts are often exacerbated by misunderstandings, misinterpretations, and implicit biases within communication. Linguistic pragmatics, which studies how meaning is constructed and interpreted in specific social contexts, provides insight into these communication breakdowns. This paper employs the descriptive research design, which focuses on describing the nature of a particular phenomenon. It explores how pragmatic tools can facilitate more effective dialogue, reduce misunderstandings, and promote reconciliation. The study concludes that linguistic pragmatics offers a valuable framework for mediating ethnic tensions, enabling clearer communication and fostering mutual respect in multicultural settings.
