Human-AI Collaboration in Contemporary Systems: A Brief Review of Status, Trends, and Research Directions
This paper presents an in-depth systematic literature review of Human-AI Collaboration (HAIC), a rapidly evolving field that explores the design, implementation, and impact of systems in which humans and artificial intelligence agents cooperate to perform tasks and make decisions. Drawing from 673 peer-reviewed publications indexed between 2018 and 2022, this review provides a comprehensive bibliometric and thematic synthesis of current trends, theoretical models, application domains, ethical considerations, and future research priorities. The analysis identifies significant growth in scholarly output and funding across key areas such as explainability, trust, transparency, and collaborative decision-making. It highlights a range of collaboration typologies, from assistive and advisory systems to fully integrated symbiotic teaming models. Moreover, the review uncovers a concentration of research activity in high-stakes fields like healthcare, military applications, and law enforcement, where concerns about ethics, governance, and inclusion are most acute. Despite increasing public visibility and interdisciplinary interest, the literature reveals persistent geographic and cultural asymmetries, pointing to the need for globally inclusive, participatory, and ethically grounded approaches.
