The role of media in conflict management in Somalia

Abstract The media plays a crucial role in conflict management, influencing public perception, shaping narratives, and either escalating or de-escalating conflicts. This study examines the role of media in conflict management in Somalia, focusing on how local and international media impact conflict resolution efforts. The research assesses the media's role in de-escalating violence, its positive and negative influences, and the challenges faced by journalists in conflict reporting. Using a mixed-methods approach, data was collected through surveys and interviews with media professionals, policymakers, and community leaders. The findings indicate that while the media can promote peacebuilding by fostering dialogue and countering misinformation, it can also exacerbate tensions through biased reporting and propaganda. Additionally, journalists in Somalia face threats from armed groups, government censorship, and lack of professional training, which limits their ability to contribute effectively to conflict resolution. The study highlights the need for ethical journalism, media literacy programs, and stronger legal protections for journalists to enhance the role of media in peacebuilding. Recommendations include increasing investment in conflict-sensitive reporting, strengthening regulatory frameworks, and promoting media independence to ensure balanced and objective reporting. These insights provide valuable guidance for policymakers, media organizations, and peacebuilding practitioners seeking to harness the media’s potential in conflict management in Somalia.
