Human Circumstances and Existentialism in Reflection of Mahesh Elkunchwar
Abstract: Mahesh Elkunchwar stands out as a leading playwright in modern Indian theatre, intricately examining the nuances of human existence in his work Pratibimba (Reflection). The play addresses themes such as identity, existential dilemmas, societal pressures, and self-identity. This paper investigates the human condition depicted in Reflection (Pratibimba) by analyzing its characters, thematic elements, and the relationship between reality and illusion. By situating the play within the context of existentialism and contemporary Indian drama, the analysis underscores Elkunchwar's critique of social norms and the fragmented nature of self. His play Reflection (Pratibimba) (which translates to "Reflection" or "Mirror Image") is a profound psychological drama that dissects the themes of self-perception, alienation, and the fragmented nature of human existence. There are merely four characters in the play: Woman, He, Flags and Girl. Reflection is an existential play. The quest for identity is the Central theme of the play Reflection. This research paper examines Reflection (Pratibimba) through the lenses of existence, and the human status, analyzing how Elkunchwar employs the protagonist's internal conflicts, the metaphor of the "mirror," and the interplay between illusion and reality to depict the existential struggles of modern individuals
