Musical theatre is a form that came to India through the Parsi people. Its development and spread in the 19th century moved it towards many countries like Sri Lanka. The arrival of various Indian professional theatre groups and their influence made musical theatre an inevitable form in the Sri Lankan Tamil theatre. After the 1930s, when Indian theatre groups could not come to Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan artists like Sankara Das Swamigal, Pammal Sambandha Mudaliar, who acted with Indian artists and were trained by them, started establishing theatre societies and performing plays. In such a way, Inuvil Erambu Annaviyar, Puthuvatty Ratnam, Vairavi Annaviyar, Ponnalaik Krishnan, Kannika Parameshwari, Krishnazhwar, V.V. Vairamuthu, etc. are notable in the musical theatre tradition. The development of the musical theatre tradition in the Sri Lankan Tamil theatre through such personalities and the emergence of the artists as professional artists are very important milestones in the history of theatre. The main objectives of this study are to examine the contribution of the theatrical personality M. Boniface Thairiyanathan, who was the successor to this tradition, to make the diversity of his theatrical activities known to the world, and to hand over the continuous tradition of musical theatre to the next generation as a document.
