BEING RED-TAGGED ACTIVISTS: THE CASE OF THREE SOUTH COTABATEÑOS
This study delved into the experiences of being red-tagged activists of the three South Cotabateños. The study utilized a single – holistic case study which allowed the researchers to look closely at the participants’ experiences of being red-tagged activists, their challenges and coping strategies from their involvement in activism. The researchers conducted a one-on-one interview. The results indicated that the red-tagged activists faced challenges along the way and coping strategies in order for them to survive from the label. Despite the challenges, the red-tagged activists exhibited resilience by adopting proactive bold strategies to mitigate the labeling they experience. However, they have experienced a dangerous phenomenon that they have to deal with, especially when there are circumstances that are not favorable for them. Moreover, the experience of being red-tagged highlights a system that aims to suppress dissent and silence those who challenge it, yet it also serves as a powerful call to action. To lessen the prevalence of red-tagging, it is essential for the government to implement reforms that safeguard human rights, encourage open dialogue, and create a more inclusive environment for dissenting voices. This includes strengthening laws that prevent discrimination, harassment, and violence against those labeled as communist or terrorist threats.
