ENHANCING ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND ENGAGEMENT IN HIGHER EDUCATION PHYSICS USING ALGODOO SIMULATIONS
Algodoo is a 2D physics simulation software used to visualize physics concepts. This study examined the impact of Algodoo simulations on academic performance, retention, and engagement in a Wave and Optics course at Bukidnon State University during the first semester of SY 2024–2025. Using a quasi-experimental design, 37 students were divided into two groups: one used Algodoo simulations and the other used traditional Laboratory Optics Kits. Academic performance was measured through pretests, posttests, and retention tests, while student engagement was assessed across cognitive, behavioral, and affective domains using a validated questionnaire. Findings revealed that both instructional methods led to the improvement of academic performance. Although posttest results showed no statistically significant difference between groups, retention scores were significantly higher in the Algodoo group, indicating better long-term learning. Engagement increased significantly in both groups across all domains, with the non-Algodoo group showing slightly higher behavioral and affective engagement, though the differences were not statistically significant. Overall, the study suggests that combining Algodoo simulations with traditional laboratory tools can enhance learning outcomes in physics education. A blended learning approach is recommended to maximize the strengths of both methods. Future research should consider larger sample sizes and explore the long-term impacts of technology-driven simulations on science education.
