Inequalities in Women's Employment in Different Sectors with special reference to the undivided Jalpaiguri District, West Bengal, India
The involvement of the female workforce in the job market has been a subject of core inquiryfora few decades. Approx., 78 % of Indian women are still marginalized in their field of work; with the duo of lower remuneration and rights. Most females in West Bengal have been noticed either in agro or the native household industrial sector. Combo of modernization and technological innovation lead to the exclusion of these workers from their field of job or else they are substituted by men or machinery. The picture of the undivided Jalpaiguri district is not so different in this regard, even some previous studies have already shown alarming de-feminization in agricultural labor. This paper aims to find out the disparity in the field of work between the male and female workers of the undivided district, as well as between the females of urban and rural areas. The entire study is based on secondary data and the data from the district Statistical Handbook 2014, Primary Census Abstract, and Census of India 2011 have been considered in this regard. At the same time, the Sopher's Index of disparity modified by Kundu and Rao (1983) is applied to measure inequality. The result of the study concludes that the scope of female job orientation is very much limited, with a huge disparity among main workers. In contrast, Falakata and Madarihat block reflects zero disparity levels for marginal household industry workers and marginal agricultural workers.
