Postcolonial Foundations for Gifted Education: A Framework for Autonomous, Child-Centered Models of Learning

Gifted children exhibit distinctive cognitive and emotional profiles that include accelerated learning, deep sensitivity, intrinsic motivation, and a strong preference for autonomy in their educational experiences. However, traditional schooling models are fundamentally misaligned with these needs. Designed to develop future-oriented productivity and adult-directed instruction, such systems frequently constrain the intellectual freedom and emotional well-being of gifted learners. This paper critiques these dominant educational paradigms and explores how they suppress the development of gifted children by overlooking their present capacities and need for meaningful, self-directed learning. Drawing on postcolonial theory and child-centered pedagogical approaches, it proposes an alternative framework that positions gifted learners as autonomous individuals capable of constructing knowledge through exploration and reflection. Thus, educational practices rooted in self-directed learning and alternative pedagogies are examined as viable pathways to support a comprehensive development of gifted students. By shifting from hierarchical, standardized systems to liberatory educational environments, this work advocates for models that nurture agency and emotional depth in learners often marginalized by traditional education models.
