State of the Art, Gaps and Challenges for Climate Resilient Maritime Ports

This deliverable report is the result of the research and analysis performed in the context of the CLARION WP1, task T.1.1., “Definition of the current SotA and innovation drivers”. The report presents a thorough overview of the state-of-the-art in port climate resilience, highlighting best-practices as well as key challenges, and identifying potential gaps in existing approaches. It also includes a comprehensive and up-to-date inventory of emerging trends and innovation drivers for improving climate resiliency in maritime ports. The employed methodology is a combination of desk research and interviews with key port stakeholders. Initially, the state-of-the-art is presented, including the most innovative and advanced research available on the field of port infrastructure and transport resilience and safety. Following that, the state-of-the-practice focuses more on practical applications, case studies and real-world scenarios, diving into specific practices adopted by European ports to enhance resilience. This part is divided into ten focus areas, each one being relevant to one of the ten CLARION pilots. Best practices in port resilience outside the EU are also included in the report, as successful initiatives applied elsewhere can be potentially interesting for European ports. The identification of existing initiatives and collaborative communities that are driving the development of green and resilient port infrastructure follows, as well as a review of existing relevant research projects. Key findings from a survey conducted among stakeholders, provide additional valuable insights into the current climate-related challenges and opportunities in different European ports. The report concludes with highlighting important points to be taken into account when planning for climate port resilience and safety.
