Efficiency Optimization of Hydraulic Plant Turbines

Hydraulic turbines are the cornerstone of hydroelectric power generation, playing a vital role in energy conversion from hydraulic to mechanical and then to electrical form. This paper presents a comprehensive study on the performance characteristics, efficiency optimization, and flow behavior in hydraulic plant turbines under various operating conditions. A case study of a Kaplan turbine in a medium-head hydropower plant is used to evaluate critical parameters such as flow rate, head, turbine geometry, and blade angle adjustment. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are carried out using ANSYS Fluent to visualize pressure and velocity contours and identify regions of energy loss. Results indicate that blade angle adjustment significantly improves efficiency, especially under partial load conditions. Additionally, suggestions for design improvements and control strategies are proposed to enhance turbine longevity and performance. This research contributes to better understanding and optimization of hydraulic turbines in existing and future hydropower installations.
