Diversity in Mating Behavior of Aquatic Insects Across Selected Orders

This review synthesizes current knowledge on the mating behavior of aquatic insects, with a focus on the diversity and adaptations observed across different taxonomic orders. Drawing from published literature, it explores the role of sexual selection, mate competition, courtship signaling, and copulation strategies in shaping reproductive success in aquatic environments. Special attention is given to how habitat type, environmental pressures, and life history traits influence mating systems, from elaborate visual and acoustic displays to cryptic sperm competition. By integrating examples from multiple insect orders, including Odonata, Hemiptera, Coleoptera, Ephemeroptera, Diptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera, this review highlights both shared and unique adaptations to aquatic reproductive challenges. The analysis underscores the importance of environmental and behavioral factors in driving the evolution of mating strategies, and it identifies key gaps for future research. This work was completed during an internship in the Department of Zoology, MES Mampad College, Kerala, as part of postgraduate training in aquatic entomology.
