Research Data Management and Sharing Workshop by ACSS & AUC: Introduction to Persistent Identifiers and Metadata

Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) are a crucial tool for advancing research in Arab research communities, offering reliable ways to identify and connect research outputs such as datasets, preprint, and samples. By implementing PIDs, researchers and academic institutions can increase the visibility and impact of their work on a global scale. However, there are several challenges to broader adoption of PIDs in the Arab region. Low levels of awareness about PIDs and their benefits, alongside limited infrastructure, pose hurdles for institutions that might benefit from them. Financial constraints in some communities add another barrier, making it challenging for institutions to adopt and sustain PID infrastructure without external support. Overcoming these obstacles could enhance global collaboration, increase the discoverability of Arab research, and contribute to a more connected and resilient global research ecosystem. In his presentation, Mohamad Mostafa addressed key challenges and ongoing efforts to enhance global PID adoption. This talk was delivered in person during the Research Data Management and Sharing workshop, organized by the Arab Council for Social Sciences (ACSS) and hosted at the American University in Cairo on December 2, 2024.
