Event Evaluation – Brazilian Python Workshop for Biological Data (2022)
This dataset contains the raw results associated with the study titled "Bridging the Python Training Gap for Bioscientists in Brazil: Improvements and Challenges". The study reports on the advances made during the 2021 and 2022 editions of the Brazilian Python Workshop for Biological Data (WPDB), originally established in 2017 (Zuvanov et al., 2021). It outlines the improvements implemented over the years based on feedback from previous editions and discusses new strategies aimed at the continuous enhancement of the workshop, which targets bioscientists with little to no prior programming experience. The raw data include responses from various surveys conducted during the 2022 edition (V WPDB), such as participant evaluations (collected at the beginning, during, and end of the event), follow-up questionnaires for former participants, and surveys answered by members of the organizing committee. The instruments used were online questionnaires composed of both closed and open-ended questions. These surveys aimed to characterize the participant profile (e.g., academic background, institution, research area, funding status, prior experience with programming and/or Python, previous omics-related experience, expectations regarding the course, challenges, and types of research data generated). All participants provided informed consent by agreeing to the terms outlined in the Termo de Consentimento Livre e Esclarecido (TCLE), which was made available in full during the registration process. The data presented in this repository fully comply with the ethical standards established by the Research Ethics Committee with Human Subjects (CEP) of ESALQ/USP, located in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil. The content of each worksheet is described below: Dia 1 - Day 1 Feedback Survey - Responses to the end-of-day questionnaire for Day 1 (Introduction to Python and Data Structures). Questions focused on participant satisfaction and the level of difficulty of topics, aiming to identify content requiring further clarification by instructors. Dia 2 - Day 2 Feedback Survey - Responses to the end-of-day questionnaire for Day 2 (Tabulated Data Manipulation). The survey aimed to assess participant satisfaction and identify challenging topics. Dia 3 - Day 3 Feedback Survey - Responses to the end-of-day questionnaire for Day 3 (Exercise’s Day). The survey aimed to assess participant satisfaction and identify learning challenges encountered during the resolution of exercise activities. Dia 4 - Day 4 Feedback Survey - Responses to the end-of-day questionnaire for Day 4 (Application of Python libraries for epidemiological data exploration). The survey aimed to capture participant feedback and identify areas for improvement. Dia 5 – Day 5 Feedback Survey - Responses to the end-of-day questionnaire for Day 5 (Application of Python libraries for biodiversity data analysis). The form evaluated participant satisfaction and learning challenges encountered during the session. Formulário Final – Final Feedback Survey - Participant responses to the final evaluation form, addressing the overall contribution of the course to their learning and the main difficulties faced throughout the workshop. Formulário de Inscrição - Responses to the initial questionnaire filled out by selected participants upon registration for the V WPDB (2022 edition). The survey included both objective and open-ended questions addressing geographic distribution, gender identity, decade of birth, research institution, academic degree, area of expertise, previous programming experience, and expectations for the workshop. 2 Formulario_ex_alunos_2022 – Follow-up Survey for Former Participants Responses from participants of the previous editions of workshop. This questionnaire aimed to assess the long-term impact of the WPDB on their programming skills, including demographic information, prior knowledge, application of skills learned, continued learning, and participation in additional programming courses. 3 Formulario_Comissao_Organizadora_22 – Organizing Committee Feedback Responses from the organizing committee members of the 2022 edition, detailing their experience with planning and organizing the event, and the challenges encountered in the process.
