Economic of Apple Industry: A Primary Survey in Baramulla District of Kashmir Valley
Abstract: The apple industry holds a pivotal role in the economy of Kashmir, especially in districts like Baramulla, where it dominates the fruit production landscape, accounting for 98% of the total output. As a major economic driver, the industry provides employment to approximately 60% of the population, serving as the primary livelihood source for numerous households. Additionally, the apple sector fosters economic growth through its robust backward and forward linkages. Despite its economic significance, the apple industry has not witnessed substantial growth in recent years. Key challenges impeding its progress include the lack of adequate cold storage facilities and a lengthy chain of intermediaries between growers and consumers. These issues highlight the need for strategic interventions to improve infrastructure, streamline distribution channels, and enhance the overall efficiency of the apple supply chain in Kashmir
