Primary Narcissism and Embodied Interpretation: The Third as Therapeutic Space
This essay reconsiders primary narcissism not as a regressive fantasy oregocentric withdrawal, but as an embodied, pre-verbal, and rhythmiccondition for the formation of subjectivity. By situating psychic life within acontinuous narcissistic spectrum—from somatic fusion to relational and self-referential disturbances—the text foregrounds the role of regulatory flow as acondition of viability. Trauma, in this context, is not located in content but inthe rupture of this primary synchronized engagement: the loss of regulatorymutuality, imprinted as a disruption in the subjective stream.Through a creative synthesis of psychoanalytic (Bion, Ogden, Green,Benjamin) and neurobiological frameworks (Schore, Gallese, Feldman, Coan),the essay reconfigures the therapeutic process not as a disclosure of theunconscious, but as an aesthetic and intercorporeal re-embodiment of thesubject. Embodied empathy, regulatory silence, and the Third Space emergeas key loci for trauma reconstitution—not merely through interpretation butthrough shared rhythmicity. The therapist’s body functions as a synchronizingvessel, a container of the unspoken experience, offering a temporary site ofsubjectivity where the flow of existence has been traumatically disrupted.
