EXPLORING THE TWILIGHT ZONE: THE LIVED EXPERIENCES OF NIGHT-SHIFT WORKERS IN CALAMBA LAGUNA
Night shift work is part of the essentials of several industries, such as health, protection services, food delivery, and entertainment. Flexibility and good money may be its attractions, but it does have its consequences on the circadian rhythm of the body, and sleep and mental well-being may be compromised in various ways. This phenomenological study investigates the lived experiences of night shift workers in understanding the impacts of night shifts on sleep, mental health, and quality of life. Key findings include the fact that many respondents appreciate the opportunity to balance work and family responsibilities and seek supplementary economic opportunities by working night shifts. The challenges include social isolation, sleep deprivation, and workplace fatigue. All these challenges are mitigated by workplace support such as flexible scheduling, health and wellness programs, and adequate financial compensation, thus improving job satisfaction and retention. Recommendations included hiring adjustments, rest facilities on duty, and incentives so that work environment may change and improve.
