Marching to the Beat: Sudanese Hip Hop as a Counter-Hegemonic Practice
This thesis examines Sudanese Hip Hop as a counter-hegemonic cultural practice during the 2019 Sudanese revolution. It explores how rap music functioned as a form of resistance to the ideological dominance of Political Islam under Omar Al-Bashir’s regime. Using ethnographic interviews, lyrical analysis, and Gramsci’s theory of hegemony, the study traces the emergence of Sudanese Hip Hop as a youth-led platform for political mobilization, identity construction, and social critique. The work contributes to understanding how cultural production can challenge authoritarian power and foster solidarity among marginalized communities.
