Planetary-Defense KCR Mesh: An Open-Source CubeSat Constellation for Sub-Millisecond CME Early Warning
Coronal-mass ejections (CMEs) can induce geomagnetic storms that disrupt power grids and satellites with only 15-60 min warning from L1 monitors. Planetary-Defense KCR Mesh (PD-KCR) proposes a distributed constellation of 3U CubeSats equipped with the KCR-Lens magneto-optical sensor to deliver sub-millisecond B-field telemetry from a heliocentric orbit at 0.7 AU. Multi-point, low-latency data fusion is simulated to extend actionable lead-time to ≈6h, allowing grid operators to reconfigure before impact. All CAD, firmware and simulation notebooks will be released under CERN-OHL-S v2 / GPL v3.
