Trusted Data Repositories: Essential Community Resources Disciplinary and Interdisciplinary Research
AGU24 Invited talk in session IN12A - Collaboratively Advancing Trust in Data Repositories and Integrated Infrastructure to Enable Interdisciplinary Research, Applications, and Uses of Open Data Abstract “Earth and space science data are a world heritage” is the first phrase of AGU’s Position Statement on Data. These data are at the heart of our research and through analysis allow us to better understand our world. They are a primary element and asset for our work, and yet the funds needed to manage and preserve them are inadequate. Every researcher should have access to a trusted data repository where curation experts are available to help ensure that adequate metadata and other documentation are associated with datasets in a manner that supports interoperability and reuse. These same curators can assist with identifying existing datasets to support new research challenges. This talk will share the metrics that AGU is tracking through their publications and on where datasets are being preserved, frequency of using discipline repositories, and the challenges this creates for fostering trust in both disciplinary and interdisciplinary research teams.
