Socio-Economic Conditions Of Selected Sample Handloom Weavers In Spsr Nellore District
ABSTRACT The handloom industry is an integral part of India’s traditional and rural economy, providing employment to millions of artisans, particularly in states like Andhra Pradesh. Despite its cultural richness and economic potential, the sector faces multiple challenges, especially in terms of weavers' socioeconomic conditions. This study aims to analyze the living and working conditions of selected handloom weavers in SPSR Nellore District by examining aspects such as demographic profile, household income, employment pattern, housing and asset ownership. A total of 350 handloom weavers were surveyed using a structured questionnaire and personal interviews. The data was analyzed through percentages and tabular representation to provide a clear understanding of the ground realities. The findings reveal that most weavers are engaged in full-time traditional weaving with limited earnings, poor access to modern amenities, and insufficient awareness or utilization of government schemes. A significant portion of them depend on informal credit sources and are currently in debt, lacking adequate social security coverage. The study concludes that while the handloom sector holds significant cultural and economic value, it suffers from systemic neglect and requires targeted interventions in areas such as credit access, technology support, market linkages, and welfare awareness. Enhancing the living standards of weavers through policy reform and capacity building is crucial for the sustainable development of the handloom industry in the region.
